How can I approve an online purchase?

Credit card purchases are safer than ever and the current rules better protect you and your money, you might see this called Strong Customer Authentication (SCA).  Under these rules, you need to approve some of your online purchases using the Vanquis app. This confirms it’s really you making the payment.

Here’s how we keep your online payments protected through Strong Customer Authentication.

Visa Secure is the new name for Verified by Visa. It helps keep you safe from fraud when shopping online by adding an extra layer of security to your purchases. Thanks to your previous purchase history and info on the devices you’ve used to shop online, this extra layer of security usually works automatically and most of the time, you won’t need to do anything.

But now and again, you’ll be asked to ‘Confirm it’s you’ with Visa Secure.

If your notifications are turned on in your phone settings, we’ll send a notification that takes you straight to the app login. If not, just open the app as usual and you’ll be asked to ‘Approve’ or ‘Decline’ your payment. There are no codes, just a few taps and you’re done.

Just to confirm, you won’t have to verify your identity this way every time you use your card. Also, some low-value online transactions (under £25) don’t need Strong Customer Authentication. The same goes for all over-the-phone payments (where you give your card details) and cash withdrawals.

NOTE: if you haven’t approved the request we sent you within 5 minutes, you would need to start the purchase again on the merchants website.

Check that your contact details are up to date, you can update your phone number and email address in the app.

Stay safe online

As always, remember to Take Five and stop to think about online safety. Criminals are experts at pretending to be people, organisations and the police. They spend hours researching you for their scams, hoping you’ll let your guard down for just a moment.

Stop: Taking a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or details could keep you safe.

Challenge: Could it be fake? It’s ok to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you.

Protect: Contact Vanquis immediately if you think you’ve fallen for a scam and report it to Action Fraud.
