Can I use my credit card to pay at the pump for fuel?

Yes, you can. But it’s good to know a few things first:

  • Make sure you have enough funds available. Most fuel providers complete a check on your credit card before releasing fuel. This is a pre-authorised amount, that comes from your available credit and is held to pay for the fuel once you’ve finished.
  • In the UK, the pre-authorised amount is up to £100.
  • Outside the UK, the pre-authorised amount can be up to £150.
  • After you buy fuel, the amount you spent is deducted from the pre-authorised amount. The remaining amount is then released back to your available credit.
  • It can take up to 10 days for the fuel provider to release the remaining amount.
