Your story

Tell us about yourself and what you do at Vanquis, without using your job title.

I’ve spent more than 15 years working in technology and quality within financial services. One thing has stayed constant throughout my career: I genuinely enjoy helping teams deliver change with confidence. Whether it’s a new product, a regulatory initiative, or a major platform transformation, I like being part of the journey from idea to delivery, making sure we get it right for our customers.

At Vanquis, I work closely with colleagues across both business and technology. A big part of what I do is bringing people together, helping different teams navigate complex challenges, make informed decisions, and keep quality at the heart of everything we deliver.

What I enjoy most is solving problems that don’t have obvious answers. Those moments when a group of people with different perspectives come together, work through a challenge, and achieve something meaningful are incredibly rewarding.

Just as important to me is helping others grow. Seeing someone develop new skills, build confidence, and progress in their career is one of the most satisfying parts of what I do. At the end of the day, great outcomes come from great teams, and I take a lot of pride in playing a part in that.

What attracted you to Vanquis, and why did you decide to join?

I was drawn to Vanquis because of the transformation journey it was on. It was clear the organisation was investing in modern technology, improving customer experiences, and embracing change in a meaningful way.

Having spent my career in financial services, I saw an opportunity to contribute my experience while taking on new challenges and continuing to grow. What really stood out was the ambition of the organisation and its focus on making a positive difference for customers. I wanted to be part of that journey.

The next chapter

What was happening at Vanquis when you joined, and what excited you about being part of it?

When I joined, Vanquis was on an exciting transformation journey, investing in modern technology, evolving its products, and improving the experiences it delivers to customers. It felt like a business that was looking ahead and actively shaping its future.

What really excited me was the opportunity to contribute to that change. I enjoy being part of programmes that have a real impact, and the chance to help deliver meaningful improvements for customers while working alongside talented, passionate people was something I couldn’t pass up.

What does “The next chapter starts with you” mean to you personally?

To me, it means recognising that everyone has the power to make a difference, regardless of their role. Some of the best ideas and biggest improvements I’ve seen in my career have come from people who were willing to speak up, challenge the way things had always been done, or suggest a better approach.

It’s about taking ownership, staying curious, and believing that your contribution matters. The future isn’t shaped by one person or one team, it’s built by people working together to create positive change every day.

Ownership and impact

Tell us about a change, improvement or idea you’ve helped bring to life.

One of the improvements I’m most proud of has been helping embed quality much earlier in the delivery lifecycle.

Historically, testing can sometimes be viewed as a final step before release. I’ve worked with teams to shift that mindset by strengthening test strategy, increasing collaboration between teams, and encouraging quality ownership across delivery. Through a greater focus on automation, API testing, and early engagement, we’ve been able to improve release confidence while reducing risk.

The biggest achievement hasn’t been introducing new tools or processes; it’s been helping create a culture where quality is everyone’s responsibility.

How does your work make a difference to customers, colleagues or the wider business?

A lot of quality work happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt every day by customers and colleagues alike. My work helps ensure that changes are delivered safely, reliably, and with confidence.

For customers, that means products and services that work as expected and provide a positive experience. For colleagues, it means having confidence that changes have been thoroughly assessed and validated.

For the wider business, it helps reduce risk, support regulatory compliance, and enable faster delivery of strategic initiatives. A lot of quality work happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt every day by customers and colleagues alike.

Problem solving

What’s one challenge your team has solved that you’re particularly proud of?

One challenge I’m particularly proud of was managing quality across several transformation initiatives running in parallel, each with its own priorities, dependencies, and stakeholders.

Success required strong planning, collaboration, and communication across multiple teams. What impressed me most wasn’t just the end result, but the way people worked together to overcome challenges, support each other, and remain focused on delivering the right outcomes.

It reinforced my belief that successful delivery is always a team effort.

What’s a complex problem you’re tackling today that candidates might find exciting?

One of the most exciting challenges is finding ways to deliver change faster while maintaining quality, resilience, and compliance.

Customers expect better digital experiences, businesses need to innovate quickly, and technology continues to evolve at an incredible pace. Balancing all of those factors requires creative thinking, strong collaboration, and a willingness to embrace new approaches such as automation, AI-assisted testing, and data-driven quality insights.

That’s what makes the role so interesting, there is always a new challenge to solve.

Building what's next

Which piece of work will have the biggest impact over the next few years?

The continued transformation of our lending platforms, customer journeys, and technology landscape will have a huge impact. Modern platforms create opportunities to improve customer experiences, respond more quickly to change, and deliver innovation more effectively.

Establishing strong quality foundations within these programmes will help ensure those benefits are achieved in a sustainable and reliable way. I’m excited to see the long-term impact these changes will have on both our customers and the organisation.

What excites you most about the future of your area?

The future of quality engineering is incredibly exciting.

When I started my career, testing was often viewed as a separate activity that happened towards the end of delivery. Today, quality is becoming a strategic enabler of successful transformation.

Advances in automation, AI, analytics, and continuous testing are creating opportunities to improve efficiency while delivering even better outcomes.

I believe we’re only at the beginning of that journey, which makes it an exciting time to be part of the profession.

Technology and innovation

What’s one misconception people might have about Technology and Change at Vanquis?

People sometimes assume Technology and Change operates behind the scenes and is disconnected from customer outcomes.

The reality is that almost every improvement customer experience is enabled by the work happening within Technology and Change.

Whether it’s introducing new products, improving customer journeys, strengthening security, or implementing regulatory change, these teams play a critical role in delivering positive customer outcomes and supporting the organisation’s future growth.

What exciting problems are you solving with technology?

We’re constantly exploring how technology can help us deliver higher quality outcomes more efficiently.

Whether that’s through automation, API-led testing, cloud-based platforms, improved data analysis, or emerging AI capabilities, we’re looking for ways to reduce risk while enabling teams to move faster and make better decisions.

The challenge isn’t simply adopting new technology; it’s finding ways to use it to create better outcomes for customers and colleagues.

Growth and development

How have you grown professionally since joining Vanquis?

The biggest growth for me has been moving further into strategic leadership.

I’ve had opportunities to influence large-scale transformation programmes, work closely with senior stakeholders, and help shape quality strategy across multiple initiatives. At the same time, I’ve continued developing my technical knowledge and understanding of how technology can support wider business objectives.

Perhaps most importantly, I’ve learned the value of balancing people, process, and technology to drive successful outcomes.

What advice would you give to someone looking to grow their career in your field?

Stay curious and keep learning.

Technology never stands still, and neither should we. Build strong technical foundations, but also invest time in understanding people, communication, and the broader business. Some of the best opportunities in my career have come from stepping outside my comfort zone and taking on new challenges.

Be adaptable, ask questions, and never stop looking for ways to improve yourself and those around you.

Culture and belonging

What has surprised you most about the culture here?

The spirit of collaboration. People genuinely want to help each other succeed, regardless of team or role. I’ve always found colleagues approachable, supportive, and willing to share knowledge and experience.

That creates an environment where people feel comfortable contributing ideas, solving problems together, and focusing on what’s best for customers and the organisation.

How would you describe your team in three words?

Collaborative. Supportive. Resilient.

Looking ahead

If we spoke again in two years, what would you hope to have achieved?

I’d like to see that we’ve continued to strengthen quality engineering across the organisation and successfully embraced more intelligent, data-driven ways of delivering quality.

Personally, I’d be proud to know I’ve helped develop high-performing teams, supported colleagues in achieving their career goals, and contributed to transformation initiatives that have delivered meaningful value for customers.

For me, success is measured not only by what we deliver, but by the people we’ve helped develop along the way.

Final word

What’s the one thing you’d want candidates to know before applying?

This is a place where you can genuinely make a difference. You’re given opportunities to contribute, challenge the status quo, and be part of meaningful change.

If you enjoy solving problems, learning new things, and working with talented people who care about delivering great outcomes, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to grow and have an impact. It’s an exciting time to be part of the journey.
