Why was my card declined when paying contactless in a shop?

There are multiple reasons why your card can be declined.

When using your card, always check:

  • Your purchase isn’t over the £100 contactless limit (if you’re using contactless)
  • You have enough available credit
  • Your account is up to date
  • Your card has not expired

New card? If it’s a new card, make sure your card has been activated and your first purchase needs to be made using your PIN before you can pay contactless.

To protect your account, every now and again we ask customers to make a purchase using their PIN. So, it’s important you know your PIN. Plus, if a contactless transaction is declined, ask to try again by inserting your card into the card reader and using your PIN.
